Dealing with Lifting & Hygiene: Why Your DIY "Quick Fix" Might Be a Science Experiment

We’ve all been there. You’re typing away, grabbing your keys, or mid-workout when you notice it: the dreaded lift. That tiny gap between your gorgeous enhancement and your natural nail is mocking you.

It’s tempting—oh, so tempting—to grab a bottle of nail glue and just "tack it down" until your next appointment. But before you play amateur surgeon with your manicure, let’s talk about why that "quick fix" is actually a recipe for a nail nightmare.

The Gap is a Trap: Understanding the "Greenie"

When a nail lifts, it creates a pocket. While it looks small to the naked eye, to bacteria and fungi, it’s a luxury spa resort.

If you apply glue over a lifted nail, you aren’t just securing the enhancement; you are sealing in whatever was hanging out in that gap. This usually includes:

  • Moisture (from washing your hands or showering)

  • Oil

  • Bacteria

Once sealed, that moisture is trapped in a dark, warm environment. This can lead to Pseudomonas, affectionately known in the nail world as "The Greenies." It’s a bacterial infection that leaves a green stain on your natural nail. While it’s usually treatable, it’s definitely not the "colour of the season" anyone wants.

Prevention is the Best Policy

The best way to handle lifting is to stop it before it starts! Here’s how to keep your sets pristine between visits:

  • Use high-quality cuticle oil daily. It keeps the enhancement flexible so it moves with your natural nail rather than snapping away from it.

  • Your nails are not screwdrivers, soda-can openers, or box cutters. Using them as tools is the #1 cause of mechanical lifting.

  • After swimming or showering, make sure to dry your hands thoroughly. Long-term water exposure is the enemy of nail adhesive.

  • Life gets busy, but pushing your fill to the 4 or 5-week mark changes the balance of the nail. As it grows out, the "stress point" shifts, making a lift almost inevitable.

"I See a Lift! What Do I Do?"

If you notice a gap and your appointment isn't for a few days, follow these steps instead of reaching for the glue:

  • Wash the area with soap and water, then dry it completely.

  • If the lifted bit is snagging, you can very gently use a fine-grit buffer to smooth the edge so it doesn't catch on your hair or clothes.

  • If it’s flapping, simply put a Band-Aid over it to keep it stable until you can get to the salon.

  • Most techs (including me!) would much rather squeeze you in for a 10-minute repair than have to treat a bacterial infection three weeks later.

Professional Tip: If you see any green, yellow, or brown discoloration under the nail, do not cover it with polish. Leave it open to the air and see your nail professional immediately!
